How does PageRank Affect A Webpage’s Search-Ability?

Hello everyone and welcome back to Ready Artwork’s Web Wednesday! I am sure many of you have used Google search to find resources and information on the web especially since Google search is one of the most popular search engines used worldwide!

According to the following Google Infographic, there are 620 million visitors to Google.com a day. That is an incredible amount of people who are using the search engine Google.com to find what they want or need.

Statistics Google PageRank

Have you ever wondered how Google decides to order the millions of webpages on their search engine result page? Why is a mundane looking webpage listed before a more advanced looking webpage, even though they contain similar resources? Is there any way to improve your ranking amongst Google’s millions of results?

As it turns out, Google uses an algorithm that crawls multiple webpages and designates their placement on Google’s SERP (search engine result page) based on popularity. This link analysis algorithm is called PageRank, which was named after the American computer scientist Larry Page.

PageRank is a numeric value assigned by Google based on a scale of one to ten, which represents how important or relevant a page is considered out of all the millions of pages on the web.

A higher PageRank positively correlates to a webpage’s search-ability. Think of PageRank as a system of voting. When a webpage links to another, it’s essentially casting a vote for the other page, saying that this other webpage is a credible source of information. Pages with higher PageRank have more “votes” or incoming links from other pages. A PageRank of 0 means that the webpage has a low number of incoming links.

Reaching the number of links necessary to achieve a solid 10 PageRank is rather difficult, however. For example, www.Facebook.comwww.Apple.com and even www.Google.com all score a PageRank of 9.  While http://www.usa.gov and www.twitter.com are two of the rare few that have a PageRank of 10.
