Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of driving traffic to your website organically or in other words, for FREE. Search engines will display your website higher in their results if they believe you to be relevant and an authoritative presence on your topic. The higher you rank, the more clicks you’ll get to your website! Here are 3 Basic SEO Quick Tips for your small business:
1. Research and choose keywords
Conduct keyword research with the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to find the best keywords to target. Pick highly searched and competitive keywords that are relevant to your business. You can also perform a Google search and see which types of queries that Google also recommends. This can give you an idea of some keywords or long-tail keywords that have not been taken advantage of. Also be aware of the keyword competition. Some keywords are extremely competitive and while they may not be unattainable for rankings, they will be extremely difficult to rank for. Aim for the long-tail and eventually you may even begin ranking for the shorter, 2 to 3 word keywords!
Generating unique and quality content is the most important thing you can do to optimize your website. Ensure that everything you publish on your site is free of grammatical errors, not plagiarized, easy to understand, helpful, and relevant. Remember, content is king!
3. Title, Tags, Images and Description
Every title, tag, or image description is essentially a label; its function is to classify a name or phrase. Completely fill out all descriptions, same content quality rules apply!
Bonus Tip: From the keywords that you’ve chosen in your research, integrate them in your content and descriptions to rank higher! Meta descriptions don’t directly affect SEO but they do influence click-throughs! Think of it as a preview to entice someone to click on your link.
