How many times have you tossed a flyer straight from your mailbox into the trash bin? What did all of those fliers have in common? There was probably an over-abundance of writing, boring font text choices and very bland colors. Nowadays, it’s all about fast-scrolling, fast-forwarding and getting right to the point. You only have a couple of seconds to grab your viewer’s attention, so keep your flier simple, with only the bare minimum of content. Don’t forget our phrase: LESS IS SUCCESS!


First, brainstorm a concept for your business flyer. Keep your target audience and your competitors in mind. When trying to communicate the main point of your flyer, try to use catchy and exciting phrases. You may want to ask yourself: What does your business offer that others don’t? Do you have any special promotions going on? Be very strict about your word count because your viewers don’t have the time to stop and read through a text heavy flyer.

Any additional information should be placed as a small footer text so interested viewers can walk up to your flyer and take notes. Most importantly, don’t forget to add contact information, including your logo, address, phone number, e-mail address or website link.

Now that you have all your verbiage down, the next step is to design an eye-catching flyer! At this step, it is important to pay attention to color, text and hierarchy. Which colors fit in with your business’ brand identity or will stand out the most? Pick one to two fonts that will make your flyer look simple and clean. The header font can be the more extravagant font, while your content can be the more conventional font.

Next, you can play with text hierarchy. If there are certain words that are more important than others, try to bold these texts or increase it in size. As for imagery, if you are promoting a recognizable product, DJ, actor, artist, or place, images of these things, people and places will be effective for your flier.

Some other catchy ways to design a flier is to create a parody of other advertising campaigns. For example, the campaign for “Got Milk?” became so popular that other businesses used this simple phrase to promote their own business. The most famous parody of this campaign was “Got Rice?” coined by an Asian American. It became so popular that it was soon printed on posters, t-shirts and hats. If you ever use this technique, remember to credit your sources or even ask permission from the proper owner.

The final step is proofreading! Have your family and friends read your flyer before making it public. Make sure that the flyer is eye-catching even when standing three to four feet away.

You should post your flyer at least one to two weeks before your event to allow enough time for people to see your flyer and make plans accordingly. It’s also helpful if you post your flyer early on in order to promote your event before your competitors take up advertising space. Some places to post flyers in can be coffee shops, telephone poles and even online!
