How Instagram Works in 2018

It’s only been three months into 2018, but Instagram has been very busy changing up their algorithm. It seems like the algorithm is making it even harder for your posts to be seen.

Now more than ever, engagement is crucial. Instagram has stated that “The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post.”

When a post receives a ton of likes and comments, this signals to the Instagram algorithm that your post has quality, engaging content that more people will want to see. Instagram is doing this to improve user experience, prioritizing moments we care about the most. So how do you get your followers to see your posts?

Hack 1: Use Instagram Stories 

The more that a user interacts with your Instagram Stories, the more likely your posts will show up in their feed.

Ever since Instagram rolled out stories, users have been spending more and more time on the stories feature than on their newsfeed. The algorithm update takes into account all of the interactions you receive on your Instagram Stories as well, such as replies or when your stories are sent to someone. So it’s so important that in addition to curating content for your feed, you must have content for stories.

Hack 2: Engage with your audience

The new algorithm update is pushing for authenticity. Your content should be encouraging your audience to have a conversation. When you engage with an account regularly, you are letting Instagram know that you like that particular account. This rule applies for business accounts as well; if your followers are regularly liking, commenting, and watching your stories, then your posts will become more likely be shown to them.

Hack 3: Use all of Instagram’s Features 

Instagram continues to roll out new features every few months so it only makes sense that you would also be rewarded for using all of the platform’s features. There have been a ton of new features added to Instagram stories like gifs, different fonts and polls. Make sure you keep an eye out for these new updates!
